People ask me for advice on what I use with my dogs. We have tried different products and found these to be the best for us at a reasonable price. With 10 dogs, effectiveness and price are big factors in our decision. I talk to people all the time, and I'm happy to help. I built this page to give everyone access in case we didn't discuss each category.

Basset Hounds are the second-best scent dogs behind the Bloodhound. It is important that you thoroughly clean any urine quickly. Then use an odor eliminator to get rid of any smell. Lingering urine smells tell the puppy that it is okay to urine in that spot.
It's advised to keep your puppy off carpeted areas because they are harder to clean. If you want them in a carpeted area, make sure they have a washable diaper on until they are fully house-trained.
We start working on house training at 3-4 weeks of age. The puppies have a foundational understanding when they go home. Their bladder fully develops around 4 months. During the training process, take the puppy outside where you want them to eliminate. Praise them when they do and say nothing when they have an accident. If they pee in the house, start back with the basics and walk outside to the area you want them to go. If they continue in the same spot inside, make sure you do a deep clean of that area and use an odor eliminator.
Puppies are worse than toddlers. You can't allow them to roam your home unsupervised in the puppy stage. You still have to crawl around and see what they see on their level to puppy-proof your home, just like you would a toddler. My dogs have 3 areas in our home where they are allowed. During the day they play outside if the weather is nice. The area is properly fenced, and clear of any dangers of things they could chew up. We have oversized kennels they sleep in when the weather isn't nice (most bassets hate the rain). In the evening, we are all in our bedroom watching TV and cuddling up (Ok, we are watching TV). We have a baby gate that keeps them in the room with us and not roaming the house.
Note that I didn't mention the kitchen. Our dogs pass through the kitchen on their way to/from the kennels, but they are not allowed to roam the kitchen. Adult bassets are just as curious as puppies and food-driven.
This car seat is everything you want. It attaches to your car by the seat belt and a leash inside the seat to attach to your dog. The seat keeps them in place and is very comfortable. It is tall so they can see out the window without getting up.
The ramp is very important if you can't deadlift 40-60 lbs. Start them young and lead them up the ramp on a leash. It folds up easily and be kept in the car.
This harness is sturdy. It doesn't come in contact with the shoulder like other harnesses.
